November 29, 2011
TORONTO — The Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State (Transport), today delivered a speech at the 23rd Annual Canadian Airline Investment Forum in Toronto. The two-day national conference deals with aviation asset management and financing.
"Canada's aviation industry is a key contributor to the country's economic growth," said Minister Fletcher. "Our government is committed to helping ensure the aviation sector remains financially viable for the benefit of travellers and shippers, as well as the tourism and business sectors."
In his speech, the Minister emphasized the importance of market forces in providing air services, and driving innovation and efficiency, while ensuring the highest possible levels of safety and security. He underscored the government's commitment to working with partners across the aviation sector to continue to ensure high-quality air services in Canada. In addition, the Minister described how air transportation safety measures, particularly safety management systems (regulations for commercial air carriers, developed in consultation with industry), help give Canada one of the safest air transportation systems in the world.
"Our government has created an open environment that is compatible with Canada's national interests, and that enhances the safety and security of the travelling public," added Minister Fletcher.
Every year the conference offers a platform for Canadian airlines, aircraft manufacturers and finance experts to discuss current issues, future plans and strategies, aviation asset management and ways to find affordable financing.
