July 06, 2009
WINNIPEG, Manitoba (6 July 2009) – The Honourable Steven Fletcher, Member of Parliament for Charleswood-St. James Assiniboia, joins with all Winnipeggers in mourning the passing of world-renowned sculptor Dr. Leo Mol.

"Dr. Mol was a gifted artist and an outstanding individual," said Fletcher. "His work is known around the world and stands as an example of the exceptional talent that exists in our city and province."

Dr. Mol's sculptures are found across the world, with some of his best works making up the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden, located in Assiniboine Park. The garden attracts tens of thousands of visitors to the park every year. The collection was generously donated by Dr. Mol to serve the community where he chose to live.

"Dr. Mol's impact on the arts community of Winnipeg cannot be overstated," said Fletcher. "He will be missed." In 1989, Dr. Mol was appointed an officer of the Order of Canada in recognition of his contributions to the Arts.  Dr. Mol was 94.
