March 17, 2009

(March 17, 2009) Winnipeg – Funding announced by Canada’s Government will make much needed improvements toWinnipeg’s 17 Wing in by rebuilding the south east apron on the airfield and building an extension to the Canadian Forces School of Survival and Aeromedical Training facility says the Honourable Steven Fletcher, Member of Parliament for Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia.

“Our government’s investment for improvements to 17 Wing will help stimulate economic activity in Winnipeg and create jobs,” said Fletcher.

The aging South East Apron of 17 Wing has been used for maintenance and parking of aircraft as well as a loading and refueling area since 1980.  The reconstruction project, expected to begin in the summer of 2009, will rebuild the apron bringing all areas to operational readiness.

The Canadian Forces School of Survival and Aeromedical Training facility provides training to all Canadian Forces aircrews, however the school currently requires additional space to meet their mandated training requirements. Funding will help renovate and reconfigure the existing building to maximize the use of space, build an addition to the facility to accommodate additional work stations, offices, a storage room and a new classroom. Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2009.

“17 wing is an important part of our community,” said Fletcher. “I am pleased our government is supporting the place where some of the best pilots, air navigators and multi-skilled personnel in the world are trained.”
