January 27, 2009
Canada’s government took bold action today with the introduction of Canada’s Economic Action Plan to protect Manitobans from the global economic downturn says the Honourable Steven Fletcher, Member of Parliament for Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia.

“This multi-year plan will put more money in the hands of Manitobans, and build Canada’s economy to ensure we emerge stronger than ever from this period of global economic slowdown,” said Fletcher.

Over this year, and the five following fiscal years Budget 2009 delivers $699 million in tax relief and a share of $4.5 billion in infrastructure funding, directly to Manitobans, including:

  • The acceleration of work on Winnipeg’s Centreport Project;
  • $340 million in income tax relief;
  • $104 million through a temporary Home Renovation Tax Credit;
  • Improvements to a six-kilometre stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway through Headingley;
  • $71.9 million to Seniors through a $1,000 increase in the Age Credit; and
  • $31.4 million in support for first-time home buyers.

“This Action Plan provides sustainable measures that has Canada is in a much better position on the world stage during these challenging economic times,” said Fletcher.
