Canada’s Economic Action Plan Supports Winnipeg’s Recreational Infrastructure
April 23, 2010

Winnipeg, Manitoba
– Winnipeg is moving forward with significant improvements to its recreational infrastructure, thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan and the City of Winnipeg.

“These important investments will create immediate jobs for local workers while upgrading our community’s recreational infrastructure for many years to come,” said the Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State for Democratic Reform and Member of Parliament for Charleswood-St.James-Assiniboia, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.

This funding is going towards significant enhancements to Assiniboine Park; improvements to the North Centennial Recreation and Leisure Facility; and upgrades to various soccer fields and athletic parks throughout the City.

Funding of $1,526,667 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The City of Winnipeg is providing $4,683,896 toward these same projects.

“The City of Winnipeg remains committed to investing in our crumbling recreational infrastructure and I am proud the City is committing $3.6 million toward our crown jewel –Assiniboine Park,” said Mayor Sam Katz. “The City, with support from our Government of Canada Partners, is pleased to ensure we continue to invest in sports facilities city-wide for athletes of every level.”

The RInC program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. In total, Western Economic Diversification Canada has approved 718 RInC projects that will use all of the funding available in the West. These projects are helping provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
